How To Deal With Alopecia

The medical term for baldness or hair loss is alopecia. It occurs in various patterns and due to different reasons. Often, it is hereditarily passed on from one generation to the next. Girls or older women may suffer from alopecia due to tight braids or ponytails. Sometimes, there are medical reasons such as hormonal imbalance or nervous system disorders which may be responsible for hair loss.

One of the simplest methods to deal with the problem would be to massage the area to stimulate blood circulation and promote hair growth. This is for milder cases, otherwise go to a dermatologist at the earliest and seek medical help.

In this fast paced world, stress has emerged as a major contributor to alopecia areata. It affects men and women and in 60 per cent of the people, hair loss is seen even before the age of 20. There is very often a virus which causes this disease and hair loss is usually partial. It may reappear after a few months and fall from another area. Even if untreated, it will not affect a person’s general health and well being. So if considering treatment, weigh the pros with any potential side effects.

A treatment used to cure severe alopecia areata is called contact immunotherapy. This involves weekly application of medication on the scalp. Regrowth can be expected in about 3 months. Or hairpieces which are made of real or synthetic hair can be implanted onto a nylon mesh and attached to the scalp with the use of clips, glue or tape. Hair weaving is another technique where hair is sewed into existing hair.

Another type of alopecia, alopecia totalis or universalis affects hair all over the body. Even hair from the eyebrows or eyelashes may fall. This can be treated with steroid injections, topical steroids, minoxidil solution, Dithranol, etc. Another effective but slow remedy is cortisone injections on the scalp. This steroid is also injected into the scalp if hair loss is in patches. Injections are given on the scalp with 1 cm gap in between, at intervals of 4 or 6 weeks.

Strictly abstain from the use of any kind of chemical treatment such as hair color or perms if you have alopecia. This could worsen the condition and leave you worse for wear or maybe worse for the comb. Treat your pate well and you will be able to tousle your hair.
