What causes hair loss is one of the questions that most of us are finding an answer for. Before we look for the causes of hair fall, let us first try to understand as to what can be termed as hair loss problem. Generally an adult has approximately thousand strands of hair and almost all of us loss fifty to hundred hair per day while combing or washing our hair. This is a normal phenomenon and is not a part of hair loss problem that needs to be treated and pondered over. It is a part of hair cycle when old hair dies and the new hair replace them.

However, when the rate of fall of hair exceeds this normal phenomenon then it is termed as hair loss problem. It is in this situation that what causes hair loss becomes a pertinent question and needs to be pondered over before one can treat one’s hair loss problem.

Male baldness is generally caused due to the hereditary reasons. If a man has a history of androgenetic alopecia that has been running in the family of either of the parents then the chances of male baldness increases in such a case. However, these genes become prominent and cause hair loss only if other factors such as stress, hormone imbalance are also present in men. Thus one of the ways to protect yourself from male baldness is to make sure that other factors of hair loss do not become prominent in you.

Generally what causes hair loss in women is the hormone imbalance due to certain reasons. In women hormonal imbalance is generally caused on the onset of menopause. At this time, the level of estrogen hormone falls down and in turn causes hair loss in them. Similarly, the fall of estrogen level occur in women in the post pregnancy period as well, that usually last for three to six months, and cause falling of hair in women. What causes hair loss in women as well as men can be the disease such as thyroid that can lead to hair fall in them.

It is also believed by a lot of people that certain drugs taken by a person can also lead to falling of hair. Some of these drugs include birth control pills, anticoagulant that is used as blood thinner, medicines that are used as a part of chemotherapy in order to treat cancer, excessive intake of Vitamin A tablets, antidepressant medicines and drugs to treat gout and so on. Radiation therapy used to treat some diseases can result in fall of hair. Falling of hair caused due to these reason can easily be solved once the person stops taking these medicines and treatment.

Apart from these, what cause hair loss in women as well as men is the deficiency of certain vitamins, fungal and other infections on the scalp, improper care of hair, diseases such as diabetes or lupus, use of chemical hair product and other similar causes.
