For women, however, it evenly thins out all over the head and the hair results in being weaker all over the head. It is said that one does not necessarily inherit thinning hair from one parent but it could be a contribution of both but if there has been a constant pattern of hair thinning and hair loss, then there is a slight chance it may happen. It is important to know what really causes thinning of hair, the myths associated with hair loss and ways to cope with it. There have been many myths behind thinning hair. This includes the fact that it is hereditary, the fact that one is constant combing or treating of hair or is a problem and the fact that hair in the drain or on the comb is a sign of hair loss. However, the myth is true that in order to find out what may causing ones hair to thin, then one should look at what may have happened about 3 months prior. It is also important to note that hair loss is gradual and will not happen overnight.
Here are some reasons for thinning hair:
- One of the main causes of thinning hair, especially in women, is menopause. This is because the hormones suddenly become imbalanced as estrogen levels begin to drop. As the body tries to get accustomed to these changes, then there is a chance of one’s hair thinning out. This is the same case when it comes to thyroid diseases.
- Another reason is the fact that one may be having a diet that is not conducive for hair growth. This includes foods rich in iron, vitamin D, and zinc. This type of thinning is nothing to worry about as the hair growth cycle goes back on track after diet changes are made.
- Stress and trauma are reasons behind thinning hair that coined the phrase ‘want to tear my hair out’. This is because the body is trying to cope with the situation at hand. These stresses could include death or loss of a close one, home, work issues, and even ones health condition.
- Conditions like childbirth, surgery, and radiation treatment in the case of cancer patients also tend to contribute to hair thinning and loss. One could also lose hair if the hair products in use are inferior, if ones medication is strong or even tying up ones hair too tight.
In many situations, if one is suffering from thinning hair, then he/she is advised to first figure out what may be the problem. If it is stress and trauma, then therapy and psychiatric evaluations are a first step to recovery. If one has a nutritional deficiency, then he/she must change their diet accordingly. There are hairstyles that one can put that will complement hair loss in the event that the hair loss is there to stay.
